She Designed Meta's New AI Logo. Then Came the Hate
Jessica Hische knew working for Meta might upset some people. But she didn't anticipate just how angry they would get. Bay Area lettering artist Jesscia Hische knew that when she took a freelance gig to design the M logo for Meta's new AI assistant Muse, it was bound to make some people angry. "AI is such a third rail, and Meta is such a third rail," she tells me. Still, as a small business owner who relies on client work to keep her two brick-and-mortar art and stationary shops in Oakland afloat, she says she needed the money.
What are the five pros and cons of artificial intelligence?
What are the five pros and cons of artificial intelligence? Share What are the five pros and cons of artificial intelligence? Artificial intelligence has rapidly become a tool used by hundreds of millions of people, but tech leaders are sounding alarms against the rapid advancement of AI that is being seen as a threat to humanity. AI systems can now generate text and images, write computer code, and perform complex analyses that once required a significant amount of time and human input. However, their rapid development has also raised concerns about job losses, the spread of misinformation, and the resources needed to power AI infrastructure.
Anthropic warns of bids to use AI to build biological weapons
Anthropic has disrupted several attempts to use its artificial intelligence models for research that could help develop biological weapons, the United States technology company has reported. The firm listed the cases in a report issued on Thursday outlining misuse of its models, including the chatbot Claude, over the past eight months. Concern continues to rise over the potential dangers posed by AI development. The company said it erred on the side of caution. In one case in May, a scientist sought help with a grant application to engineer mutations to chikungunya - a mosquito-borne virus similar to malaria - to make it more harmful in live animals.
How kids feel about AI, in their own words
Does an AI-filled future seem like promise or peril to today's teens and tweens? We went right to the source. When we set out to talk to kids about artificial intelligence, we thought we knew what we'd hear. We expected some to tell us they were using it to cheat a little, the way Millennials and Gen Xers opened up CliffsNotes or programmed formulas into their TI-82s, and others to share inspiring ways they were using it. We were also listening for concerns that were less kid-specific, like deepfakes or job destruction. But what we actually heard when we asked kids aged 10 to 18 about AI had tons of nuance. Many of the same kids who can go on and on about music, rock climbing, or soccer met our questions with words like "bruh" and "meh"--or were so deeply against AI or uninterested in making it part of their lives that they didn't want to talk about it at all. One teen said his peers use it for things they know they shouldn't, like writing papers. One told us she won't touch AI because of the environmental impact. A few said they find the whole field disheartening: "AI isn't the solution to our problems," said Winter, a 17-year-old.
Teachers need help with AI. A union is offering training – with 23m in funding from big tech
Without guidance from their schools or districts, many teachers are left to figure out whether and how to use AI tools. Without guidance from their schools or districts, many teachers are left to figure out whether and how to use AI tools. Teachers need help with AI. Earlier this year, he and several dozen New York City teachers spent the day inside a windowless conference room in downtown Manhattan to learn how to use AI and prevent students from outsourcing their thinking to it. As Saczuk sees it, he needs to understand his enemy in order to beat it.
Japan's AI gamble: Can technology offset the cost of an ageing society?
Japan's AI gamble: Can technology offset the cost of an ageing society? Beneath the business towers of Tokyo's Otemachi district, a test is taking place to see whether artificial intelligence can help solve one of Japan's biggest economic challenges: a shrinking workforce. Deep underground, Marunouchi Heat Supply Company operates a 30km (18.6-mile) network of heating and cooling pipelines serving offices, commercial buildings and transport facilities in one of Japan's most important business areas. The company is now using AI to manage this complex infrastructure with the goal of moving towards more automated operations by 2027. Developed with the Tokyo-based AI company Preferred Networks, the project uses PlantPilot, an AI system trained on historical operating data and the expertise of experienced engineers.
AI in the classroom prompts tide of concern from US parents and experts
'There is this overwhelming sense that ed tech companies are deciding what kids learn, and teachers are just being put into this position of tech support instead of driving the decisions about what is best for kids in terms of learning.' 'There is this overwhelming sense that ed tech companies are deciding what kids learn, and teachers are just being put into this position of tech support instead of driving the decisions about what is best for kids in terms of learning.' In October, Kelly Clancy's son received an assignment in sixth grade at a middle school in Brooklyn, New York, to create a science experiment and then ask Google Gemini, an artificial intelligence chatbot, for feedback, she said. Clancy, who has three children in New York City public schools, told the teacher that the bot "is something that just teaches kids that they can have machines do the thinking for them", instead of suggesting: "Let's talk to your partners. What about the science experiment could you improve?" Clancy also founded Parents for AI Caution in Educational Spaces, a group pushing the city to institute a two-year moratorium on using AI in its public schools.
How I won fantasy football in my first ever season - without using AI
The Premier League season might be long-forgotten already - but we're definitely still in the window where bragging about how well you did in fantasy football is just about acceptable. Plenty of people will have been frantically checking the app on Sunday to see if they'd beaten friends, family or colleagues and topped their mini leagues. Someone who was refreshing a little more than most is 23-year-old Everton fan Erik Ibsen. But the Danish medical student managed to hold on to his lead to be crowned the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) champion - in his first season playing the game. Ibsen only started playing because his sister was doing a work league and wanted some help, which turned into him picking his own team for sibling rivalry.
HMRC to use AI from British tech firm to spot fraud and tax return errors
HM Revenue and Customs has announced a 10-year, £175m deal with the British tech firm Quantexa to provide AI-powered technology to help improve its performance. Quantexa says its systems will combine data collected by HMRC with external sources to help the tax office identify incidents of fraud and fix unintentional errors more quickly. Its tasks will include helping HMRC to assist customer service staff, as well as to identify hidden networks of companies and individuals masking fraudulent activity. Public dissatisfaction with HMRC performance has crept up in recent years, according to government figures. A Freedom of Information request made by the campaigners at the Contentious Tax Group found there were more than 93,000 complaints made about the department in 2024-2025 .
